“Perky does not mean that one is perked up by temporary situations, but it refers to unconditional cheerfulness, which comes from ongoing discipline.”
— Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche
At this point in the Sacred Path, The Four Dignities (Meek, Perky, Outrageous, and Inscrutable) engage a warrior’s maturing and widening sphere of benevolent engagement in the world. The training allows one to maintain awareness and delight at each stage.
The Warrior of Perky, symbolized by the lion, is the second of the four dignities. Perky focuses on cultivating sharp, vibrant, and uplifted energy through natural discipline. Overcoming the trap of doubt, the warrior of perky is able to accomplish his or her activities with a sense of nobility and ease.
Repeaters welcome and encouraged! We invite you to join us to review and re-experience these teachings!
Jesse Miller is a long-time student of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, and has also studied with Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche and Pema Chödrön. He has taught widely at centers on the West Coast, New Zealand, and Australia.
Joanne Martin Braun has been a student of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, and Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche for four decades. Since first studying with Trungpa Rinpoche she has been in love with the Shambhala teachings on cultivating mindfulness, compassion, and wisdom to affect the way we are in our world together.
Even with all of life’s ups and downs, Joanne finds the Shambhala teachings extremely inspiring and helpful, and has tried to practice them in her family, community, and work life. Her professional activities over the years have been in counseling, nonprofit management, and teaching meditation in business and healthcare settings. Joanne lives in Sonoma California with her husband Lou and their dog Caia.
Irv Kirschbaum has been a practitioner, meditation instructor, teacher and administrator in Shambhala since 2007. A student of the Sakyong Lineage and Pema Chödrön, he delights in sharing the dharma with others, and currently also serves the Shambhala organization in a variety of governance roles. A part-time Early Music musician and a full-time Human Resources professional within Healthcare, the Life Sciences and Technology for more decades of his life than not, he currently lives in the wooded hills near Lake Berryessa in Napa County, California with his husband Paul and their beloved American Bobtails, Maximillian and Esmeralda.
